Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon denies rumors that NetherRealm Studios is working on Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe 2. The original title, developed and published by Midway Games, released in 2008 as a crossover between the Mortal Kombat and DC Comics universes, featuring almost two dozen iconic characters from both franchises.
Although it was a crossover game, it's still considered a canon installment in the Mortal Kombat series. Also, because it would be strange to most general consumers to have heroes like Green Lantern and The Flash removing their opponents' spines, characters had other options for finishing moves. These 'heroic brutalities' were just as fight-ending as the other moves, but they left the recipients alive. That is, by fighting game standards. Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe was an intriguing answer to Marvel vs Capcom, and a sequel could very well excite fans. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like a sequel is happening anytime soon.

Boon refuted Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe 2 rumors on Twitter, along with the Mortal Kombat movie character rumors. He said: 'New Mortal Kombat movie rumors inaccurate. Our (@NetherRealm) next game not MKvsDC2.' The news is doubly disappointing. It's bad news for fans who were looking forward to something more watchable than 1997's Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. And it's also not great for people who had their hopes set on another crossover fighting event.

That doesn't mean that people who love cartoonish violent fighters are completely out of luck. Boon teased a new entry in the Mortal Kombat franchise ahead of last month's E3. It never showed up, unfortunately. But all Boon's tweet says for sure is that consumers can't expect another DC crossover title. It's been three years since the last Mortal Kombat game, so the timing would make sense.
Since its release, Mortal Kombat X has received two downloadable Kombat Packs, which added new fighters to the roster. Some of these were characters from previous titles. But others were crossovers from different horror movies. They included Jason Voorhees from the Friday the 13th series, the Predator, Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Alien's Xenomorph. All these additions basically made it a crossover game, anyway. But it wasn't the one MK vs. DCU players have hoped for the past decade.
NetherRealm has taken a break from its trademark series to put out two titles in the Injustice series. These take place in an alternate DC Universe in which Superman goes bad and tries to take over the world. Both entries received both commercial and critical success, so at least people who can't wait for Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe 2 still have some superheroes to spar with in the meantime.
